An elderly relative of mine told me they called it "wash day" because it literallly took an entire day to wash all the clothes of a big family. So Carmen is definitely slacking if it's taken her 3 days.
My maternal Grandma, used to regale us with stories about the wash house, she had us in fits. Did you know some people were looked down upon and shunned by fellow washer women simply for not having a whiter than white wash and there was something about my mother when she was 5 helping out with the mangling, turning the handle, with a glint of malice in her eyes, trying to trap Gran's fingers in it, now I know who I take after! My paternal grandparents paid someone to do their laundry. Whilst flying low over Leeds (a northern city in England) I could hear people remarking and excitedly pointing at various landmarks down below, forget that, I was looking down in people's gardens hoping to see washing hung out on the line and other signs of commonness, there were a few but not many.
You could make your own film from the collected stories of your family. There were a few cases of mangled fingers in my family, too from what was called the "wringer washer."
She was probably hanging out in the cafe, trying to pick up some dirty youth.
ReplyDeleteThat's Carmen at 3:48 taking some punishment from a dirty youth.
DeleteHeaven help her when you discover that all your smalls and "delicates" have shrunk with all that boiling! Jx
ReplyDeleteMy gussets don't need a boil wash, shame the same can't be said about Carmen's.
