"Gaudete” (“Rejoice”) is a sacred Christmas carol sung in your actual Latin and it's one of Mitzi's Christmas favourites. Reaching number 14 in the hit parade* in 1972 its good but not as toe tapping as their number 5 hit All Around My Hat.
*The top-40 music charts in days of yore was called The Hit Parade.
I bloody love this, being a bit of a chunky knit folky on the quiet! I saw Steeleye Span years ago and they were fecking brilliant.
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas, Mitzi.xx
Do you remember this folky singer? She once had a day trip to Bangor!
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas to you too. xx
Merry Christmas, Carmen & Mitzi!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you too and God bless us everyone. I've turned into Tiny Tim.
DeleteI have no idea who Steeleye Spam are, thank you, so I have something to search.
ReplyDeleteBtw if you like Latin hymns or cantus Georgianus search for Signore Giovanni Vanini.
Spam? Steeleye Span were a firm favourite with my dad, I think he had a "Thing" for Maddie Prior. I only know two Latin hymns Gaudete and Pie Jesu as sung by the lovely Sarah Brightman. Thanks for the recommendations!

DeleteSorry, a typo.
DeleteI wonder if folk ever confused Steeleye Span with Steely Dan?
ReplyDeleteThese bands are hard to tell apart,
ReplyDeletebut here's a rhyme to learn by heart,
Steely Dan rock do play,
whilst Steeleye Span sing folk all day.
I hope this helps.
