Where have you been? I hear you ask. Nowhere. I've been busy with a new hobby. I recently bought a sewing machine, not a top notch one, just a cheapo for practicing on, I've been teaching myself the rudiments using step by step guides and watching numerous Youtube videos, it hasn't been easy, learning to drive was a doddle compared with learning to use a sewing machine, after weeks of tears of frustration I've learnt what a bobbin is and what it does, it's that little round thing that goes under the whatsit and you have to remove a slider to get to it. I actually thought a spool of cotton was the bobbin when I first started (yes really!). I haven't made anything yet, I have been taking random shirts out of Carmen's wardrobe and making slight alterations to them, taking them in an inch or two from the sides seams, to make her think she's putting weight on, she hasn't twigged yet.
Note to self: Never drink and write.
"When the red red robin goes bo-bob-bobbin' along..!"
ReplyDeleteGood trick to play on Carmen. I wish I had thought of that one; I'd have traumatised my sister even more than I did when we were teenagers. Jx
I bet it was like Baby Jane Hudson and Blanche in your household. I used to traumatise mine on a regular basis too, I once sneaked the neighbour's cat into my sister's bedroom as she slept, then went back downstairs for the dog
DeleteI used to chase mine around the house with the chicken mother was planning to cook for Sunday lunch. Jx
DeleteChasing your sister around the house with a uncooked chicken?Amateur!
DeleteOoh, good luck with your machine! What do you hope to make with it once Carmen cottons on to what you've been doing?
ReplyDeleteThe Mother bought a cheapo machine from Lidl a few years back, and I appropriated it for a while. I never really got to grips with it - particularly as all my 'emergency stops' ended up like drag races along the fabric as there's only one pedal...
My sister has the machine now. It's gathering dust in her spare room.
Something spectacular like this rope rug.
DeleteCarmen has got a nice Ralph Lauren shirt I've been thinking about giving it leg-of-mutton sleeves.
I never gave Lidl a thought, got mine off Amazon I will pay Lidl a visit to see if they have any cheap cotton.
Oh dear. If , by "cotton" you mean the skinny bit of thin string you poke through the teeny slit in the needle...DO NOT BUY cheap stuff. The bloody stuff goes furry , clogs up the bobbin race, buggers the tension thingy and breaks needles. I hope this helps.
DeleteI bought a pack of 8 mixed cottons (polynylon) for 69p but fear not Dinah I won't use them I'll wrap them up for a Christmas present for my mother. That metal thing with a screw that juts out just above the needle I trapped my finger underneath it yesterday, the pain was exquisite.
DeleteI so want to learn how to work a sewing machine!!!! I want to know how to work a bobbin.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could make a demo on how to thread the damn thing?
Sx
Give it a go, if just for the sheer joy of winding a bobbin, I use a magnifying glass to thread it, fiddly to say the least.
DeleteI had every opportunity to learn how to use a sewing machine when I was growing up but did I? No. So kudos to you for learning.
ReplyDeletep.s. I see a box of sloths in the background.
Same here, we were taught how to use one at school, Home Economics class, I could never get to grips with it and would end up saying a few choice words resulting in me being sent outside to cool down.
DeleteThank you for admiring my sloth memo cube it was bought from The Works
Yes a recent purchase I made from The Works.
I meant to delete that last sentence.
DeleteI've decided one of the few benefits of being old is that I don't have to learn anything now. It's quite a relief.
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not I'm on the threshold of middle age, it's true and you are as old as the man you feel!
DeleteI heared that Bernina is a good marque. But I will not go near one of these finger eating devilish devices.
ReplyDeleteI looked at Bernina but I didn't want to pay Bernina prices. When the novelty of it wears off, I wonder if it could be converted into a tattoo machine, put a beaded curtain up and open shop and become a backstreet tattooist.
