Not to be confused with the Flamingo Hilton hotel in Las Vegas, this is a scratter filled amusement arcade. |
After a staggering 4 and a half hour drive we eventually arrived at the seaside town of Great Yarmouth just 20 miles east of Norwich. The journey would have taken less but my maid of all work Carmen insisted on stopping
here at a farm house cafe and shop for a break. The inside of which looked like it came from the set of George and Mildred somewhere in the 70s, we had a meal there, a cup of tea and a bun each and got change from a tenner! How many road side services could boast that eh? Not a lot! I did offer to drive the rest of the way mentioning the fact that I'm prone to swooning due to the distorting effects of the heat haze on the road. She fell for it too!

Fancy a punt? The beautiful North Drive boating lake. Let's take a closer look at those Red Hot Pokers shall we? |
|
They could do with dead heading but still a sight for sore eyes! |
Feeling a little peckish, we decided to try something a bit more traditional. Yesterday's World cafe with it's 1900's air about it seemed the perfect spot. Carmen ordered the cream tea and I enjoyed an 'Aunt Sally' no, I haven't gone all Martina Navaratalova an 'Aunt Sally' as stated in the menu is simply a slice of cake and a cup of tea, Worzel Gummage would have loved it. I would have liked one of those glass sugar dispensers that pours out one measured teaspoon when you tilt it, but I suppose sugar cubes is more traditional.

Shops on Regent Road are smaller independent, souvenir type shops and cafes, walk down til you get to the bustling town centre. |

Where we stayed. A lovely hotel, however the walls were paper thin and you could hear all the carrying ons in the room next door. I woke up in the early hours of the morning to the sound of seagulls screeching from overhead, however it wasn't until I heard NOT THERE TERRY! NOT THERE! that I realised that it wasn't the seagulls after all but the randy pensioners next door having a session! |
|
Where we should have stayed. MJ's B&B. 'There's room to roam at MJ's' a swingers B&B? situated on the seafront opposite the Brittania Pier. |
I would have liked to have written sooner, but blogger felt the need to punish me by removing the 'Tramps in Love' picture and for disabling my cursor amongst other things. How petty! I've had to write this in the HTML mode and it's been a nightmare.

'Cause I've seen oh, blue skies
Through the tears in my eyes
And I realize I'm going home'
Well, I'm gutted that The Tramps in Love was removed. How utterly prudish.
ReplyDeleteI recall going on A Mystery Tour(do they still do such a thing any more?)on a coach in the Seventies and we ended up in Great Yarmouth. All the way from Newport. It was a mystery how the driver wasn't murdered. We all thought we were off to Weston. Anyway, all the grown ups were pissed for the journey back so all was well. It is a pretty place. I do like a Red Hot Poker but they don't arf look scabby if they're not seen too.

Yes they still do them, my mother and her husband went on a mystery tour weekend a couple of years ago with National Holidays and ended up here Check out the traveller photos, they're a hoot! She had a room with bird shit on the window and lovely scenic views of the bin yard.
DeleteI am pondering whether to take up the MJ's franchise somewhere in Devon... I'm sure I could cater for all comers.

That would be nice, are you trained in silver service and have a flexible spine?
DeleteI suspect the problem at MJ's B&B would not be thin walls but the hidden cameras!
ReplyDeleteNot to mention the live web cams and a two way mirror in the honeymoon suite.
DeleteEww, gods, that Farmhouse Cafe. I stopped there once, had a perfectly horrid cup of "coffee" and vowed never to go back. It did seem quite popular, though, so maybe the coffee was just having an off day?
ReplyDeleteAs for Gt Yarmouth, your photos make it look quite beautiful. Well done!

Water bewitched and tea begrudged is what I thought about the tea there. But the staff were quite nice, Latvian I think.
DeleteI once went swimming at a little-known resort called Lowestoft off the east coast of England. It was delightful, one of my most memorable experiences, so very English. When I was bathing, I glimpsed a rare and beautiful fish - it was brown all over with sweetcorn for eyes!

(back blogging again after an extraordinarily long break!)
Welcome back Fanny! I'm surprised you didn't die of hypothermia. I dipped my toe in and was chilled to the marrow. I remember swimming in the sea in Sitges and a rare species of jellyfish was bobbing about next to me, it must have been dead because someone had tied a knot at the end of it.
DeleteAnd I gave you Goethe, Banause!
ReplyDeleteIt was very moving Mago thank you. It brought a tear to my eye.
DeleteBlogger is getting quite out of hand. It sent me a snippy note about Adult Content. I suppose I'll have to revise my posts to be just knitting patterns.
ReplyDeleteHow about a nice picture of kittens in a basket followed by a recipe for shortbread?
DeleteI'm having the sign repainted to read "MJ's B & D."
ReplyDeleteOh mince alors! Sado Maso ah oui.
