My branch of HSBC was having a second hand book sale with all proceeds going to a local charity the idea is to take a book and leave a donation, not bad for 20p. Now before you call me a mean cow, when my maid of all work Carmen begins to read the book, tucked in page 69 is a £5 gift voucher for Poundland!
Appalling, Mitzi. You could have at least provided a compendium that featured The Mallen Streak.

They didn't have much of a selection. I was forced to carry that bleeding book around the town with me as the HSBC don't provide carrier bags, it's nearly 4" thick! I bumped into a couple of people I know who enquired about my reading matter, I could have wept with embarrassment!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking that Carmen could get lucky and stretch that gift certificate to £7 at a Boxing Day Sale!
ReplyDeleteThey usually have a 2 for the price of 1 sale during the New Year, so double bubble!
DeleteI've never read a Catherine Cookson novel.
ReplyDeleteWhat am I missing?
I see she's DAME Catherine Cookson.
You've never lived MJ. Fanny Mcbride is a good one to start with. It's about a woman who takes a job in a ladies convenience to make ends meet. Scarlet recommends The Mallen Streak.
DeleteSuch extravagance!
ReplyDeleteI'm just a giving person, it's a fault of mine.
DeleteMitzi, I noticed that one of the novellas contained within the book is called "The Cultured Handmaiden".
ReplyDeleteIs "The Cultured Handmaiden" written about Carmen?
Cultured (klchrd)
Deleteadj
Showing or having good taste, manners, upbringing, and education.
Carmen drinks pints, scratches her fanny and surrounding areas in public, breaks wind in the ethnic food ailse in supermarkets saying for all to hear "Oh, that curry smells gorgeous" she uses the glottal stop and watches Emmerdale.
To answer your question, no, The Cultured Handmaiden is not written about Carmen.
Yer a giver *snirf*
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Carmen and Mitzi!
ReplyDeleteMitzi first in your salutation please LX and then, if you must Carmen. Happy New Year to you too.
DeleteHappy New Year, Mitzi!
ReplyDeleteIs Poundland holding a holiday sale?
I'll ask Carmen.
DeleteHappy new year to you all, I'm a bit late doing my rounds.
