Liz's Jugs

Look what my next door neighbour from my old house has given me, two Royal Doulton Toby Jugs, the one on the left is Rip Van Winkle the other one is the Pied Piper. I'm thrilled to bits with them.

Carmen curled her lip when she saw them, jealous bitch.

Thanks Liz, I'll think of you everytime I look at them, especially the one on the right.

  1. The figure on the right may be Rip's lesser-known cousin, Hieronymus Van Winkle, who was drunk for 20 years.

    1. Like Edna the inebriate woman.

It's the Pied Piper, I've just got off my arse to take a look at it's base.

  2. I'm speechless. MAybe you looked too long at MJ's pendulum ?

And I opt for Hieronymus. He was know for seeing mice.
There are these assistant figures who help to identify the "face", like that sleeping troll on the handle left. Must be Rip doing what he's known for, sleeping.
On the right we see a kind of furry animal behind the "face", between cup's body and handle. It looks like a "Marder" or something, a marten or weasel, with the white fleece on the thorax - shouldn't it be a mean grey plague-splattering monster rat ?

And what about that creature digging out of the apple ? Or is this something like a camouflaged hand grenade ?

The amazing thing is that there may actually be human beings who are ready to fork out money for these ... things. They make even the most kitschy Hummel figurines look classy.

  3. *Raises eyes himmelwards and tuts* like I did when I showed them to my mother, who said they were 'frigging horrible' they're very forthright, Yorkshire women. This comment box is juxtaposed with MJ's swinging balls, it's sending me off into a trance like state.

It's definitely the Pied Piper of Hamelin, it's stamped on the base. The little porcelain animal is a fuchs (I hope I pronounced that right) and is separate to the jug, I must have pushed it out of the way in my excitement to take the picture.

The apple with the man inside I bought in a little shop in Koblenz, about 15 years ago.

Both Toby Jugs have been put away and are now residing in a box in the bottom of the wardrobe.

  4. On a recent episode of Corrie, someone found an inexpensive Toby mug in the charity shop to give as a wedding gift. It was the first time in years I'd seen a Toby mug. They used to be in living rooms everywhere when I was growing up.

    1. I want to know the sleeping arrangements of the Grimshaw's household, there's Eileen and her boyfried, Todd, Jason and Sean and sometimes Billy, in a shitty little 2 up 2 down house.

  5. I recently sold "The Chelsea Pensioner" Royal Doulton Toby Mug on EBAY. Turned a tidy profit too...
