What's Hot On The Box...

Wednesday 10pm channel 5. Who will be top dog?

Prisoner Cell Block H, famous for it's wobbly sets and even wobblier storylines is back! The remake is just called Wentworth, it stars none of the original cast, which I must say, was a bit of a let down, but it does have the same characters. Chain smoking, grog swilling Lizzie Birdsworth who I adored, is now wrinkle free and a blonde, dimwit Doreen Anderson is now played by an aboriginal woman and Bea Smith with her red tousled hair looks like a Pre Raphaelite painting whereas the original Bea could have modelled for Toby Jugs. I reserve judgement until I've seen more of the series but what I've seen so far had me gripped to my seat.

...and what's not so hot!
Star Treatment 12:30 ITV Weekdays

Star Treatment sees Jane McDonald and a team of stylist visiting various workplaces around the UK, where they take plain fat lasses from Blackpool give them new clothes, make-up and hair and they come out at the end of the show looking like plain fat lasses wearing new clothes, make-up and hair. If you listen closely whilst watching it, you can hear the bottom of a barrel being scraped. I like Jane, but I wouldn't take hair and beauty tips from her, she looks like an extra from Heartbeat.

  1. Prisoner Cell Block H was one of the few imports when I was a teen. Ole Lizzie was a fave. I remember she got out then committed robberies just to get back inside.

Poor Lauren Bean, could use a Magic Mitzi Makeover!

  2. Does anyone still collect Toby Jugs?

I remember seeing them in various households as a child.

  3. You often see them in the old country pubs used as ornaments, along with horse brasses and copper pots. I've never seen anyone actually drink from them.

    1. I was thinking about horse brasses just the other day after noticing them on the wall of The Rovers.

That's another thing I don't see anymore in people's houses.

    2. Toby Jugs? One'll be introduced in a minute.

That's an actual minute, MJ. You only have to watch for 60 sseconds, not the whole 11 minutes (I know how you loathe not being infomred as to the length of videos).

  4. BTW I've removed the header of Lauren Harries. I didn't want people thinking it was me.

    1. You're very wise Mago. It pains me to pay £145.50 a year, for a television licence.

  6. You still see horse brasses in houses in Devon... also ordinary brasses can be found knocking about down Plymouth docks.

  7. When I lived at home (parents) those awful brass decorative wall plates, festooned our living room walls, and we had a stone built fire place with nooks and crannies in it, filled with brass object d'art and a red carpet, it was years later, I learnt they had tried to emulate the look of The Ferguson Fawsitt Arms snug in Walkington.

We have our fair share of Dockyard brasses too.

    1. I'm on The Ferguson Fawsitt Arms website now, snooping around at the photos.

Lots of coats of arms, mounted antlers, muskets, and a huge caution written in chalk that says, "STEP."

    2. But what they call "real ales" is lower in alcohol than a simple Bavarian "Export". I thought a "real ale" would be on the better side of 5%.
