What Insect Is This?

Is there any keen entomologists out there who can help me identify this insect? It flew in through an open window, it was attracted to the light, I thought it was a moth and paid no attention to it until it landed on the computer desk inches away from my hand. It was about 1/2 " long, winged, green with a reddish V on it's triangular shaped back.

No it's not a competition.

    1. I've never heard of Peteus bestus before Lx, being the young slip of a thing that I am. Wasn't Paulus MCarteus married to a unipod? What a shame I released it, that could have been your winning prize!

  2. Hello Mitzi:
We are many things but we are not, alas, entomologists!

    1. After our stay at a mosquito farm in Sitges, I've developed a fear of all flying creatures, hence the need to know if this insect bites.

  3. Well, I'm not an entomologist, but I have got a thing for Gil Grissom which qualifies me. It's a Shield Beetle.
Either that or the aliens are coming and it's been sent on a fact finding mission. Better get that lurex catsuit out and go wait for the mothership.x

    1. It did cross my mind Ivy, it was the V sign on it's back, reminiscent the science fiction series V. I thought I was in for a night of experimental probing, but sadly not.

I saw a 2" hornet yesterday... I'd rather have your beetle.

    1. Hornets will sting when they are angry or stressed, over the years I have found that the best way to ease stress is by doing yoga. So if you are attacked by an angry hornet. Simply fold it's legs into the lotus position. Failing that a quick whack with a tea-towel should do the trick.

    2. I shall play it some whale music.

  5. On the off chance it might be related to the Asian Stink Beetles currently infesting the Hew England area, do not squish it.

If it is of the stink variety, smushing it will attract others. Simply pick it up with a tissue and bung it down the loo.

  6. Thank you DuPree, with your help and Ivy's, I've managed to identify the beetle. It's a Hawthorn Shield beetle and they do smell when squished. A neighbour had been trimming her bush earlier on that day and must have disturbed it.

    1. August is the month for bush pruning, at least as gardeners we know that. We fear that your neighbour may have been a touch previous in her cutting habits!

    2. They're all brown fingered where I live, absolutely hopeless. The woman who lives next door had beautiful young birch trees growing in her front garden, she had them lopped in May, they now look absolutely hideous.

  7. Well, if you ask me I would have to guess that it is an ancient Egyptian scarab beetle. The kind that sucks the youth and beauty from unsuspecting strangers then transfers these gifts to it's impossibly beautiful and strangely eternally youthful possessor...

  8. Do you think it was sent by one of our Gaydar Beauties to regain her youth by draining Mitzi's life force and beauty essence? I have been feeling a little fatigued today.

  10. As a trained Entomologist, I can accurately identify the insect you have posted as a rare species, called Carole Vorderman.

iPad and tested to see if it can survive a thirty foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation.
My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is totally off
topic but I had to share it with someone!

  13. Whats up this is kind of of off topic but
I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding knowledge so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!
